ATV Education Program

The Tri-State OHV Club has 5 Iowa Department of Natural Resources Certified ATV Education Program Instructors. ATV education training classes for youth, ages 11 to 17 will be provided throughout the year. Please check the Calendar of Events page regularly for new classes. Students age 11 can get certified but it won’t take effect until their 12th birthday. Currently Iowa law doesn’t require you to have a safety certificate if you ride a dirt bike in an Iowa OHV park.

The ATV education classes are designed to satisfy the statutory requirement for riders 12 - 17 years of age to have taken an ATV education course approved by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources in order to ride in the Iowa DNR-designated OHV parks. Having this education certificate also allows these riders to meet similar requirements by surrounding states.

The education classes will be limited to a maximum of 10 students, so be sure to register early when a class is scheduled. Pre-registration IS required. The education classes will last about 4 hours but are not limited to it. These are outdoor classes and will be held rain or shine. Sunscreen and rain gear are recommended for the appropriate days.



Each student must provide the following items:

1. ATV
   1. One student per ATV.
   2. ATV must be registered in Iowa.
   3. Each ATV must be fully operational and ready to ride. (fuel, oil, tires ok)
   4. MACHINES MUST BE SIZE APPROPRIATE! (This means that there needs to be a 3 inch space between the seat and crotch area when standing flat footed on the pegs/floorboards. Students must also be able to turn the handle bars freely and able to operate all controls easily.)
   5. NO SMALL CHILDREN ON FULL SIZE MACHINES!
2. Helmet (must fit properly)
3. Goggles or Shield
4. Long Sleeve Shirt (recommended but not required for hot days)
5. Long Pants
6. Over-the-ankle boots
7. Gloves (recommended but not required)

The fee for the course is $25.00. Students will also need to provide their SSN. This is required by the DNR so students can be entered into the state database.
